AFTER a week of kerfuffle and pre-apologies, Karl and Peter Stefanovic’s post-barbecue whinge turned out to be pretty tame.
In the grand scheme of Karl behaving badly stories, it was a bit of a snore – certainly not up there with hosting Today half cut, dumping his wife and shacking up with a 25-year-old or making transphobic comments on-air.
His criticisms of his workmates – made through speakerphone to his brother, who was a passenger in an Uber at the time – were largely professional, not personal.
According to the remarkably detailed recollection of the Uber driver – who totally, absolutely, for sure didn’t re- cord the conversation because doing so would be illegal – the brothers Stefanovic had a good old-fashioned bitch session about their Nine colleagues.
Karl’s worst comment, apparently, was labelling his new Today co-host Georgie Gardner a “fence-sitter”.
“(Karl) said she didn’t have enough opinions and he wanted her to step up.
“He actually sounded angry and said he was going to start pushing hard and that she needed to do that if she wanted to stay on the show,” the driver told New Idea.
The pair also complained that Nine management were “out of touch” and Karl told his little brother to push for bigger story budgets.
“Karl suggested Pete pitch ideas and say he needs $60k and not to take no for an answer, but Pete said his ideas were always knocked back and it was sucking the life out of him,” the driver told New Idea.
The driver said Karl also sooked that Today’s entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins kept his showbiz contacts to himself.
It certainly wasn’t the salacious spray New Idea promised it would be.
