Stay safe on the water
THE Northern Territory Government is committed to safe recreational boating across the Territory and is asking all boat users and operators to stay safe on the water over these Easter holidays.
Transport Safety and Services executive director Simon Saunders is asking Territorians to ensure they know the rules on the water and always operate their vessel in a safe manner.
“If you’re heading out on the water familiarise yourself with the NT safety equipment requirements and ensure that all equipment is in good condi- tion, complies with regulations and is readily available when needed,” Mr Saunders said.
“Make sure you have enough fuel on board for your intended journey, avoid risky behaviour and remember alcohol and boats don’t mix — especially if you’re the skipper.”
“There are minimum requirements for safety equipment for all recreational boats in the NT and regulations are there to keep everyone safe on the water,” he said.
There are penalties in the NT for not complying with these regulations and the NT Water Police conduct frequent patrols at boat ramps and on the water, infringements can be issued for non-compliance with marine regulations.
The NT Government Marine Safety Team will be holding a pop-up safety check booth at Dinah Beach Boat Ramp on Saturday, March 31.
There will be special giveaways, free safety tips and a chance to go in the draw to win a $500 boating accessory voucher.
