SO MANY DELICIOUS MEALS CAN BE MADE FROM HUNTED MEAT

- — BART IRWIN

THE reason most hunters in the NT pursue game is for the meat.

Magpie goose meat is one of the most delectable game birds in the world. When I lived in Victoria I thought wild roast duck was the top dish served at home.

That was until I moved to Darwin and tried magpie goose breasts.

The meat is enriched by its versatility. A goose plucked, gutted, butterflied and rubbed with salt, then barbecued on coals is a taste sensation.

But it doesn’t stop there. Geese make a great curry, satay or schnitty.

Members of NT Field and Game respect game so much they are holding the second annual Game Getters’ Gala Banquet next Saturday night.

Those men and women have travelled the country, assembling a vast range of game animals and will present an array of delicacies from 6pm.

Rabbit, quail, magpie goose, wild duck, buffalo, wild pig and fish will all be featured.

“The first event last year was such a great success, it was a no brainer to bring the members and friends together for another feast,” president Steve Lees said.

“Last year we had Greek grilled quail, goose souvla, Kentucky fried goose, goose curry, buffalo steaks and mackerel cutlets. It will be interesting to see what the members share together this year.”

It is a great family event and gives kids a chance to try lots of different game and broaden their tastes.

Corellas harvested during the NTFGA crop protection shoots will be used in Corella Tomato soup.

A rare variation on the Rosella Tomato soup product.

The Gala Banquet will be preceded with clay target shooting from 3pm and the meals will start to be dished up after 6pm.

Karaoke broke out last year around the campfire and is high on the cards to again this year.

Campers are welcome and another morning of clay target practice will ensue on the Sunday morning till noon.
