Shame on us, it’s time we were kind
WHEN I was 13, I took my very first plane trip.
It was on a family holiday to Sydney and it was my first time interstate, and one of my first times in a big city.
I can barely remember the aeroplane, or much else from that holiday.
What I do remember – in vivid technicolour – was stepping out of that shining city’s Central Station and noticing piles of dirty blankets lined up against the stone wall, and then the shock of realisation that beneath those masses of rags were people.
Abstractly, I knew about the concept of homelessness.
Of course, homelessness existed in my hometown of Rockhampton, but not in the parts of it I moved in at 13.
Equally shocking to me, that day in Sydney, was how no one else seemed to notice.
Office workers marched on, oblivious. Later that day as we waited to board a ferry to Manly at Circular Quay, a homeless bloke screamed obscenities to no one in particu- ON LOCAL MAN JONO HOLT FINDING HALF A TOILET ROLL FROM HIS LOCAL SUPERMARKET

In the lead up to their game against the Cowboys, the pair went for an ice cream at Cold Rock on Mitchell St. A homeless couple was sitting outside the shop, and Hoffman was as shocked at the lack of care from passers-by as I was stepping out of that train station.
“I think just sitting there while we were having our ice cream and watching the people walk past, it just sort of shocked us in a way,” Hoffman told News Corp.
Hoffman and Smith went to Coles, bought a few things – a bit of food and some bottles of water – and gave it to the couple.
