Wagait named the most loved-up and kindest in the NT

-

WAGAIT Shire residents are the most loved up in the Territory, according to the Happiness Survey.

The remote region, which has only 463 people, has more coupled-up people than elsewhere in the Territory, with 65.7 per cent of adults married or in de facto relationships.

Natasha Conroy moved to Wagait for a lifestyle change but said she’d noticed how romantic the people were.

“If you come on the ferry with us, you’ll find that all the couples sit together and they’re always canoodling, touching each other, and making comments and having a laugh to their own little private jokes,” she said.

The Top End’s kindest and most community oriented residents are also on the Cox Peninsula.

Wagait Shire topped the Northern Territory for volunteering rates – 28.3 per cent of its residents give their time to help others.

“We can go out there and without a doubt you could meet five, six, seven eight people along the way, even on the ferry, and they’ll say ‘how’s your day today?’ and ‘what are you doing tomorrow?’ and ‘do you want to come and hang out, do you want to come and see the band?’ anything like that,” Ms Conroy said.

“People are so warm and friendly around here, definitely.”

The Happiness Survey also showed Wagait residents were the smartest, with the Territory’s highest education score.

“The people over here, the’re very humble,” Ms Conroy said. “So when their smarts come out, they come out in the most amazing ways and the way that people put things forward and how they say things is so wonderfully neat.”

Ms Conroy urged anyone considering a tree change to head to Wagait to see what all the fuss was about.
