E-durry rules drag on common sense

-

FROM July 1, Territory retailers of e-cigarettes and vaping products will have to cover up their displays and stop advertising, thanks to laws passed in Parliament during the week.

It’s an unnecessary hindrance both for the retailers and for smokers who say e-cigarettes, which contain no tobacco or nicotine, have helped them give up much more harmful cigarettes.

The Tobacco Control Act contained a handful of other worthwhile changes, including making it illegal for minors who work in tobacco retailers to sell durries, but the biggest changes – ones nobody asked for or wanted and could have unintended negative consequences – are re- served for e-cigarettes. It’s another example of what has become a hallmark of this Labor Government – strangely placed priorities on issues which may seem trendy or have gained traction down south but have little relevance to the Territory.

Meanwhile, important and relevant reform gets pushed to the end of the queue. ON TERRITORY PARENTS BEING LEFT IN THE DARK ON TEACHER CRIMINAL RECORDS

The royal commissioners gave it a deadline of February 2018 to come up with a plan to shut Don Dale for good.

That deadline is a year past and there’s still no concrete plan. The expected finish date for a new centre was quietly pushed out from mid-2020 to mid-2021 and even that is looking increasingly unlikely while bickering continues over where to put it.

And last year, the Government introduced legislation extending laws which provide harsher penalties for those who assault police officers to also cover assaults on fireys and paramedics. But it’s al- swag. Brooke Neindorf Cursed swag. Michael Francis Graham Bloody Alice Springs. Drew Walters
