A DECADE OF DOMINANCE

Mighty Waratah claims yet another women’s flag

ST MARY’S and Southern Districts have dominated the Nichols Medal count in the past 20 years.

The green and gold jumpers have produced seven medallists in that time, Jarred Ilett winning twice in 2004-05 and again in 2007-08 when he tied with Nightcliff’s Warren Berto.

Tommy Weetra’s tie with Southern Districts magician Adrian Collard in 1998-99 was the beginning of both clubs’ domination of the medal.

Heath Culpitt, Iggy Vallejo, Peter MacFarlane and Cameron Ilett added to Saints’ wins.

Collard’s win was the first of six for the Crocodiles in the next 11 seasons, Kelvin Maher winning back-to-back medals in 1999-2000 and 2000-01.

Bruce Jarmyn’s win in 2001-02 made it four straight for the men from Fred’s Pass.

Berto’s tie with Ilett was the first of four for the Tigers, Troy Coates four years later, Brodie Filo in 2015-16 and new Tiger Cameron Ilett last season adding to the list.

Tiwi Bomber Shane Tipuamantamerri (2012-13) is the only player from his club to win the prestigious award.
