2019 NT Youth Week Ambassador wants all NT Youth to
LOCAL Darwin dance choreographer Rochelle Cabry has been elected as the 2019 NT Youth Week Ambassador.
Rochelle has studied dance in Melbourne, Paris and Norway, but decided to return to the NT to give back to her home community.
“As the NT Youth Week Ambassador I hope to make connections with young people in my community,” she said.
“I would like to learn more about what the youth of the NT feel is important and assist where I can.”
Rochelle is working with both SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre and Corrugated Iron Youth Arts to teach young people across the Territory.
As part of her work with Corrugated Iron she travels to remote communities such as Yirrkala and Wadeye to teach dance to youth.
“NT Youth Week provides a massive range of opportunities for young people, whether it be launching your own event, learning new skills or connecting with new people from your community at an NT Youth Week event — there is so much going on and I think we should all make the most of it,” Rochelle said. The theme for NT Youth Week 2019 is “Living in Colour” which aims to showcase and celebrate young Territorians who are living vibrant, inspiring and happy lives in the Territory. The 2019 theme also has undertones of celebrating diversity and acceptance. For Rochelle “Living in Colour” means to take the time to live in the moment and experience real life. “We are very caught up in our digital world at the moment. Technology is rapidly growing and is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives,” she said. “I love technology and I am very grateful that we are fortunate enough to have all the devices available to us, but I think it’s very important that we remember to disconnect every so often and live in colour, live in the real world, enjoy reality then and there and not only through a screen.”
