NEWS Hunt for ‘sadistic’ Darwin cat killer

- NATASHA EMECK

POLICE are on the hunt for a “sadistic cat killer” who violently bashed in the head of a Darwin family’s beloved tabby cat during an attempted breakin.

Lyons resident Milley-Jane Roberts said her family was left heartbroken to find their cat Izzy had been killed when two intruders tried to break in to their Demda Circuit home at about 1am on Monday.

“I heard the cat screeching in the backyard, so I went outside to see what was wrong and saw two people jumping the fence,” she said.

“The next morning I found Izzy’s lifeless little body in the corner of the yard.

“They had cracked her skull open and she had a lot of internal bleeding – it was horrific.”

RSPCA Darwin general manager Shae Khreish condemned the violent attack.

“We understand how important animals are to people and this is a really horrific act,” she said.

Ms Roberts said the two intruders appeared to have been scoping out the property or trying to break-in when they attacked the cat.

“Izzy means so much to our family, we’ve had her for 10 years,” she said.

“She would have been in our yard, minding her own business, when this happened to her.

“There’s no way she deserved such a violent death. Whoever did this was sadistic.

“I’m begging all the pet owners out there to be careful and bring your animals inside at night so this doesn’t happen to your beloved pet.”

A spokeswoman from NT Police said they were investigating the incident and at this stage no persons of interest had been apprehended.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In the NT you can be fined up to $30,600 or imprisoned for two years if a court finds you have been cruel to an animal or have committed any other offence under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and Animal Welfare Regulations 2000.
