NEWS Legacy of Glen lives on

- LAUREN ROBERTS

JOSEPH Huitson was nearly three and his little sister Ruby was just a baby when their much-loved father Glen was killed in the line of duty.

Yesterday marked 20 years since NT Police brevet sergeant Glen Anthony Huitson’s death. On August 3, 1999, the NT cop was on duty at a roadblock on the corner of Stuart Highway and Old Bynoe Rd.

Sgt Huitson and then Constable Jamie O’Brien ( now Commander O’Brien) were watching for armed gunman Rod Ansell – who had shot two people in the area the previous night. Ansell managed to come through bush on one side of the roadblock and open fire, killing Sgt Huitson with his second shot.

No NT Police men or women have been killed in the line of duty since Sgt Huitson.

His wife, Lisa Huitson, said it was moving to see the NT community come together to mark the 20th memorial commemoration.

“It’s wonderful that he’s not going to be forgotten and it’s especially wonderful for the children – they were so young when he was killed,” she said. “They’ve heard my stories over the years, but it’s actually nice to hear it from other people.”

Mrs Huitson described her husband as a humble man, who wanted to help the Territory community and make the world a better place.

“He was just really easy, got along with everybody,” she said.

Joseph Huitson said his father’s legacy would live on.

“We come here every five years and I feel as though it gets bigger every year,” he said.

“It’s great to hear people speak about him and all their memories.”
