Undefeated Tigers singing from the same page, like last season

-

NIGHTCLIFF added a young but rising Wanderers side to its list of wins last night in an NTFL season beginning to resemble their breakthrough flag seven months ago.

The Tigers beat the Muk Muks by 64 points in another show of class by the reigning premier.

Their 17.17 (119) to 8.7 (55) win also highlighted the foot skills of Nichols Medal favourite Brodie Filo and the big emphasis they place on team football.

Both sides began the game at a furious pace, displaying tremendous foot speed and quick transfer of the football that had fans of both sides on their feet.

Filo’s two first-quarter goals were full of class, his ability to size up a situation and take maximum advantage of it a big part of his game.

Wanderers were missing bookends Daniel Weetra and Shane Thorne with a respective concussion and hamstring complaint, but their young players again stood up in the early exchanges. Davin Ferreira found space in the miserly Nightcliff backline to kick two goals and Keelan Fejo was a constant headache for the Tigers with his hard running and clean disposal.

But the longer the game went, Nightcliff’s intensity at the ball and ability to kick to a leading player took its toll on the young Eagles.

A six-goal to one third quarter set up the win, with the long kicking Blake Grewar and Michael Hagan prominent with goals from a long way out.

Wanderers were far from disgraced and must have retrieved something from the ashes of defeat, including the need to play closer to players like Filo and Hagan.

Those players can destroy sides with explosive bursts of football that can turn a close contest into a 10-goal win.
