from all across the subcontinent and south East Asia will come together next weekend for Darwin’s largest Buddhist community.

The Buddhist Society of the NT’s biannual international Food Fair will see the culmination of Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, Burmese, Chinese, Thai and even Australian food on Saturday, helping to share the

Buddhist culture with Darwin.

Along with performance and dance, BENT secretary Dulip Pallek said food helped to best bring Buddhist people together.

“Our mums are always cooking because they don’t work during the day so almost every woman in Sri Lanka, 80 per cent of women stay at home and they are always cooking, this is part of our life, part of their life, they’re always feed us with good foods so I assume that we get the best food in the world and the freshest foods,” he said.

“The very popular one is the Kottu, that was very, very famous and I could see the last few times there was a big queue for that store and also the egg hopper, that’s very famous and obviously the Laksa.

“We can definitely show Territorians our culture in our dishes, I think that’s the best way we can share our culture with them.”

Mr Pallek said the fair would also provide an insight into other aspects of Buddhism all while helping to support Buddhists and the Buddhist community across the Northern Territory and in Darwin.

“There will be cultural performances … there will be some slide shows which teach the crowd about different cultural places to visit,” he said.

“This is all about raising funds for maintaining the property, the Buddhist temple. This is the main income for the Buddhist society of the NT we hold it two times every year so this is the last food fair the year.
