Men can get breast cancer

-

THE National Breast Cancer Foundation has called for men to look out for the symptoms of the disease, with nearly one in 675 Australian men diagnosed in their lifetime.

The foundation says 164 Australian men will get breast cancer in 2019.

The foundation advises men to look out for lumps on their chest which may become more tender.

It said abnormalities around the nipple — like inverted nipples, dry skin, open sores or pimples — could be a sign of a tumour.

SCIENCE is a continuing process of coming up with findings, analysing them and then asking more questions in other directions led to by the first findings.

So, it was when Michael Vardon calculated that the annual indigenous harvest of geese was 300,000 in the 2003-2007 Magpie Goose Management Program. He was wrong, and NT Field and Game asked the question:

How many goose load shotshells were sold to Aboriginals in the 2008 season. The answer was slightly fewer than 120,000. We asked the NT Parks and Wildlife scientist: How can you shoot 300,000 geese with 120,000 crackers?

We shouldn’t have left him to decide, because he divided by two and came up with 60,000 geese shot by the indigenous hunters. Wrong!

Greg Chan owned Fishing and Outdoor World, which has sold millions of shells to goose hunters over time, and he was

Olympic clay target shooting coach at the time. I asked him how many shells the average goose hunter uses per goose. He said the average is five birds per 25 shells in a day’s hunt.

One thing is interesting, though: From 2001 to 2014 we had four-month hunting seasons and seven, or up to 10, goose bag limits. From 2003 to 2007 the scientist thought we shot a total of 340,000 geese a year and it was OK. And it was, because the overall population fluctuated from year to year, but it was only dependent on rainfall and nesting. From 2009 to 2016 the scientist thought we had a combined harvest of 110,000 and it was OK. Why now does the scientist say we may well have bag limits of three geese?

It is time to get the true answers before we penalise the hunters. As Dr Alaric Fisher said at the meeting held on August 24 to announce the 2017 season: “Hunting did not cause the decline in the goose population.” I answered: “Well why are you saying hunting fewer geese will increase the population?” I implore the Government to postpone the new management program and implement the previous plan and make an informed judgment then.

There is skeet and Five Stand sporting practice this morning at NT Field and Game range, Mickett Creek Shooting Complex, Brandt Rd, Knuckey Lagoon. The NT Field and Game range is open for practice every Friday afternoon from 4pm until 9pm. Check Facebook for more details.
