SEVEN people were caught drink-driving around the Top End as time restrictions at pubs ended.

Northern Watch Commander Bruce Payne said police had a busy night with roadside breath tests from Darwin City to the rural area.

“A 40-year-old male in Darwin returned a medium range reading of 0.089 per cent,” he said.

“And another 40-year-old male apprehended in Darwin returned a high range reading of 0.157 per cent.”

Police in the rural area were kept busy with multiple drivers caught under the influence.

“A 34-year-old male was apprehended in Howard Springs and returned a high range reading of 0.188 per cent,” Watch Cmdr Payne said.

“A 41-year-old male was apprehended in Katherine and returned a medium range reading of 0.102 per cent.

“A 41 year-old male was apprehended in Nhulunbuy and returned a high range reading of 0.219 per cent.”

In Wadeye, 404km from Darwin, Watch Cmdr Payne said two men were caught drink-driving.

“A 47-year-old male returned a medium range reading of 0.124 per cent,” he said.

“And a 52-year-old male returned medium range reading of 0.146 per cent.”

It comes just days after NT Police Commander Matthew Hollamby warned police would be targeting drink-drivers and anti-social behaviour at nightclubs and licensed venues over the long weekend after coronavirus restrictions eased on Friday.

“Celebrate but do it in a lawful and respectful way,” he said. “Territorians have behaved well and we’d like to see that continue.”
