ONE of the Territory’s most senior police officers has been fined for speeding, the Sunday Territorian can reveal.

An NT Police spokesman confirmed the officer had been fined but wouldn’t reveal details of what speed the officer was travelling, where the offence took place or the speed limit which was broken.

The spokesman said the officer had been referred to NT Police’s Professional Standards Committee.

“A senior NT Police officer was issued with a traffic infringement notice in March for speeding,” the spokesman said.

“The vehicle was NT-registered. He reported the matter to Professional Standards Command immediately.”

The officer’s speeding ticket comes as public satisfaction with police services in the NT is the lowest in the country.

A Productivity Commission report found 73.3 per cent of those surveyed were satisfied with services provided by police in the 2018 to 2019 financial year.

Total dissatisfaction, however, sat at 8.4 per cent, an improvement on the 10.3 per cent of people saying they were dissatisfied in the previous financial year.

NT Police Association president Paul McCue was not concerned with the result. He said the feedback received from the public was positive.

“While one can argue it is the lowest in the nation, all the feedback we receive from the public is very positive toward our police and they appreciate the hard job they do in the Northern Territory, which is a very challenging policing environment,” Mr McCue said.

“The figures actually reflect three quarters of the respondents are generally satisfied with police.”
