First steps to better health
Getting out and keeping active doesn’t have to be a chore.
Spring is the perfect time to shake off the lethargy of winter and give the mind, body and soul a kickstart.
In particular, regular weightbearing exercise such as walking can alter how certain parts of the brain communicate and coordinate with one another and improve memory function.
Adjunct Professor Trevor Shilton, the Heart Foundation’s director of active living, said regular brisk walking with family, friends or pets can keep your weight, blood pressure and other health conditions in check.
Walking can also lower the risk of heart disease, stroke by 35 per cent percent and Type 2 diabetes by 40 per cent.
“It builds stronger bones and muscles and can help you feel more energetic and happier,” he said. “Walking is free, easy and almost anyone can do it.”
To meet recommended physical activity levels, Professor Shilton recommends Australians do at least 30 minutes of brisk walking every day.
“If you can’t find time for a 30-minute walk, try breaking it into three 10-minute sessions. It can be just as beneficial,” he said.
“People who are already active will benefit even more by exercising harder and longer – so pick up the pace and your heart will thank you.”
