$4m program to aid roadhouses
TERRITORY roadhouses and wayside inns that suffered an economic blow because of the COVID-19 pandemic can expect a helping hand in Tuesday’s Territory budget.
NT Chief Minister and
Treasurer Michael Gunner will announce the Roadhouse to Recovery Fund, which offers grants for applicants of up to $150,000, in addition to their own contribution of $50,000.
The $4m grants program is aimed at encouraging more driving holidays.

NT Chief Minister and Treasurer Michael Gunner will announce the Roadhouse to Recovery Fund on Tuesday, which offers grants of up to $150,000 for applicants, along with their own contribution of $50,000.
The $4m grants program is aimed at improving amenities and experiences at roadhouses and wayside inns to encourage driving holiday-makers to spend additional nights in the Territory.
With Territory driving holidays being heavily promoted interstate, this boost is expected to provide more accommodation so tourists stay rather than just pass through.
The Roadhouse to Recovery Fund aims to not only help the tourist market in its recovery from COVID-19, but also create jobs through the construction and renovation of roadhouses and wayside inns in remote areas.
Mr Gunner said the NT was expecting to get a massive boost from domestic tourism as COVID-19 restrictions ease over the coming months.
“I want to make sure our roadhouses can be part of the tourism sector’s recovery,” Mr Gunner said.
“As the borders come down we’re expecting the drive market to go through the roof.
“I want roadhouses to catch this wave and get the benefits of the Territory’s comeback.
“The Roadhouse to Recovery Fund is all about giving people more reasons to stop off at roadhouses and wayside inns, and more reasons to stay.
“Next time you stop for petrol at a roadhouse, stay a little longer. They do so much for us and deserve a bit of love.
“Have a meal or even spend the night. You’ll be supporting small business, jobs and it’s a great experience.”
It will be Mr Gunner’s first budget as Treasurer after he gave the role to himself, taking over from Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison in September.
