McKenna: Dons door is still ajar
DEPARTED Essendon speedster Conor McKenna (pictured) has revealed he would consider a move back to the Bombers.
The homesick footballer moved back to Northern Ireland following a horrid year in which he tested positive for coronavirus.
He moved permanently in September after struggling to readjust to life in Melbourne following an extended break in Northern Ireland earlier this year.
But he has now said he would look at returning to Essendon on a part-time basis in a mid-season draft.
“I don’t think it’s totally done. There’s a thing in the AFL where you can get a midseason draft so you can actually get drafted in June and go out from June until September. It’s only really a two-or-threemonth thing,” he said.
“I do think the possibility may be there in three or four years with Gaelic, the way they’re talking about a split season, if Tyrone was out and the club was out of the championship and there was a possibility of going over for two or three months, it’s not something I’d close the door on.”
McKenna was named the Player of the Month for October by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Northern Irishman has returned to play top level Gaelic football for Tyrone, where he has starred in his three return matches.
Tyrone were knocked out of the competition so he will not play again until 2021.
McKenna’s move home was part of an exodus of top level players at Essendon.
Adam Saad has rejected a $700,000 a year deal from the Bombers, however they are still trying to stop his proposed move to Carlton by demanding the Blues hand over Pick 8.
