ADVENTURE AWAITS

WITH WORLD-CLASS DIVE SITES OFFSHORE AND THE MOUNTAINS AND RAVINES OF THE ANCIENT DAINTREE NATIONAL PARK AT ITS BORDERS, CAIRNS IS A MUST-SEE DESTINATION AND THE ULTIMATE LAUNCH PAD FOR AN ADRENALINE-FUELLED WEEKEND AWAY

- TYSON MAYR

The gateway to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the beautiful city of Cairns in Tropical North Queensland guards a treasure trove of natural wonders. If you’re a seasoned explorer seeking a new thrill or looking to dip your toes into something adventurous, here are three experiences to add to your adventure bucket list.

VISIT THE REEF

It goes without saying, but a trip to Cairns is incomplete without seeing the Great Barrier Reef.

The only place in the world where minke whales congregate, the world’s largest coral reef system is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. A snorkelling wonderland made up of 3000 reefs and 600 islands, there are several day trips you can take to explore this underwater world-wonder.

But if you want an experience on the surface, and also enjoy a flick of the wrist, then a deep-sea fishing adventure might be for you. The seas around Cairns are internationally renowned as some of the most prolific fishing grounds on the planet, with 10 per cent of the world’s entire fish species inhabiting this region.

Many reputable tour operators offer sustainable eco-friendly deep-sea fishing trips with a lunch break on the Great Barrier Reef - - a perfect day out on the ocean where you get to experience the reef and perhaps catch your dinner too.

GET DIRTY OFF-ROAD RIDING

Trade the Mario Kart at home for an adrenaline-pumping ATV tour of the wild and winding dirt tracks of the rainforest.

A quad-bike safari through the Kuranda rainforest isn’t your regular ATV experience; expect creek crossings, outback canyons, jungle terrain and deep gorges, all while taking in some of the most breathtaking nature Australia has to offer.

Stop at the World Heritage-listed Barron Gorge National Park to see the Barron Falls cascading from the Atherton Tablelands to the coastal plains, against the backdrop of the Great Dividing Range.

Though you don’t need a special licence to operate an ATV, keep in mind that it’s a powerful vehicle and if operated irresponsibly, nasty bumps and bruises can result.

Exercise some caution to avoid unnecessary damage.

And if that’s not reason enough to be less gung-ho, taking care may mean that you get the chance to spot an unusual sight.

This corner of the country is the only place in Australia that you’ll find the cassowary – but be wary, this flightless bird is so elusive that a sighting can never be guaranteed.

DO THE DAINTREE BY 4WD

Test your driving skills on a day trip from Cairns to Cooktown, going off the beaten path on the Bloomfield Track.

Only accessible by 4WD, the unmarked scenic route promises steep climbs, unpredictable terrain, croc sightings and plenty of adventure in an unbeatable location.

Keep in mind that Cairns and Tropical North Queensland is a fragile ecosystem so take extra care and consideration as you tour the area.
