BOMBS AWAY

THE navy’s precious HMAS Maitland was decommissioned this week.

“She”, as the sailors aptly referred to her, was farewelled with a few seaman essentials on board – regular size condoms and mosquito repellent – according to witnesses. That’s despite sailors being asked to clean the boat.

CHAMPAGNE SOCIALIST

BUSHIES’ spies found the optics of a public housing announcement curious this week. Minister Kate Worden made the announcement of more homes for the disadvantaged in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel.

RAIN ON OUR DEBATE

HOLDING a debate on Knuckey St, Darwin City, would be difficult enough on a regular dry season day but during the Wet? Impossible. Darwin’s stubborn wet weather rained on a debate on the NDIS on Thursday, causing organisers to run for cover less than 10 minutes into the forum. The candidates picked up where they left off not long after, albeit relocated within the confines of a Japanese restaurant.

CAMPAIGN C SEASON

LABOR L is having an unlucky streak with its campaign. First, Anthony Albanese’s A Darwin trip last weekend was cancelled because of Covid. Now deputy leader Richard Marles – who was expected to be in town this weekend – has Covid and has had to cancel. Music to the ears of the CLP, who’ve had both the PM and deputy PM visit in a fortnight.

FLOWER POWER

An important judgment was handed down in the Supreme Court this week when Justice Judith Kelly hastened to make an ex tempore ruling after barrister Fiona Forsyth QC accidentally let slip the Anglicised pronunciation of “pot-purey”. “I think it’s a potpourri, a little container with flowers in it,” she said. “Dried flowers that makes everything smell like lavender, it’s a potpourri,” Ms Forsyth agreed. “Apologies, your honour, I’ll correct that.” Justice Kelly also had some sage advice for young lawyers from no lesser light than SolicitorGeneral, Nikolai Christrup SC. “Mr Christrup always recommends making a deliberate error in submissions so you can refer in that manner to them and ensure that the judge has at least read that far,” she said.
