BIG WELCOME FOR NEW STUDENTS

- George Yankovich

The Northern Territory has welcomed a fresh batch of more than 300 international students with a waterfront reception.

On Thursday night, the fresh-faced secondary and tertiary students attended an evening reception at Mindil Beach Casino Resort sponsored by the NT government.

Skills, Training and International Education Minister Joel Bowden presented 15 of the best and brightest new arrivals with Study NT scholarships, valued up to $6000 each.

Mr Bowden said the night offered the opportunity for new students to “connect with each other, organisations and service providers as well as local business and future employers”.

“International students play an important role in the Territory, strengthening cultural, social and economic ties as well as bringing valuable skills to our workforce,” he said.

“Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients and welcome to all of our international student community, I wish you all

the best with your study and future success here in the Northern Territory.”

There are more than 5600 international students in the

Top End, according to an NT government spokeswoman, with plans under way to grow that number to 10,000 by the year 2030.

Nationwide, Australia hosts 567,000 international students who paid $14.5bn in tuition fees during the last financial year.
