$10k prize for NT writers a real page turner

- Sierra Haigh

A $10k prize is up for grabs for the Territory’s homegrown authors.

The Chief Minister’s Book Awards offers a $10,000 prize – as well as promotion and touring support – to NT authors whose books were published in 2022 and 2023.

Dani Powell previously won for her book Return To Dust and said receiving the award was an honour.

“I was truly humbled to receive the recognition and enormously grateful to receive both the generous prize money and great boost in publicity the award granted, which ultimately led to a greater readership of the work,” she said.

Writers can enter their works in three categories – best fiction, nonfiction, and children’s or young adult book – before May 17 for a chance to win.

Short-listed authors will also claim a $1000 prize. Each entry must be written by an NT resident, and can span genres such as biography, autobiography, creative nonfiction, history, philosophy, literary criticism, or a children’s or young adult book.

NT Writers Centre executive director SezzaJai Sykes said the awards meant Territory authors could be recognised as “distinct storytellers in the nation’s literary culture”.

“It’s always exciting to explore the high calibre of stories and written works we receive each year, and I have no doubt the judges will have a lot of great books to read,” she said. Entries close on May 17 and can be submitted via the NT Writers’ Centre website.
