DoTalk is a simple translation chat app created by an Aussie that’s attempting to break down language barriers one translated chat at a time.

Download, create a profile, choose your native tongue out of a choice of 90, find some contacts to add to your list of friends from anywhere in the world, then chat away. You can either type or dictate your conversations in your chosen language and the app’s proprietary technology — APIs and speech recognition — will send a translation in your recipient’s chosen language.

We tried English, German and Hindi, and ran into a few spots of ‘lost in translation’ gibberish and more than a few hilarious moments. But for the most part, the gist was there. The speech recognition software is pretty good, though. It picked up most of the Hindi sentences, bar a few words here and there.

It’s definitely not the next WhatsApp, but the idea behind DoTalk is fantastic, and once the little glitches are ironed out, this technology could go a long way.
