Have you ever had a time when you think, “Today’s the day I’m going to do better at the gym!” — perhaps lift a kilo more or do an extra squat — but never quite managed it in practice? Well, here’s a little secret: curse and you might just go the extra mile. A study presented at the Annual Conference of the British Psychologi­cal Society this year suggests repeating one’s favourite profanity could give someone a second wind. Participan­ts on exercise bikes or performing a grip test were asked to curse or speak a boring word like ‘brown’ and found that the groups that cursed cycled faster or gripped tighter. A few years ago, the same team found that spewing profanitie­s also helped people keep their hands in icy water for longer. So the next time you need to go the distance, get an expletive to help.
