FLIP THROUGH THE LATEST NEWS. Flipboard made its name turning social media feeds into a slick magazine-like reading application on the iPad, but these days, it’s on Android, too, and is actually a really good news aggregator and even holds its own as a to-the-minute news alert system. Much like other news aggregators, Flipboard segments its feeds by topics, but you get to further tune this category by adding a series of suggested tags. In addition to the obvious topical categories, you can subscribe to location-based news for either your country or specific region and Flipboard adds the ability to localise many relevant categories like politics or entertainment for a fully localised feed.
This app is better at collecting news than it is at alerting you to it, but it does offer push notifications that can be toggled for each feed. Unfortunately, this is where Flipboard’s settings taper, missing out on the options to change the threshold of notifications and their frequency. It does plug into the most prominent read-it-later services Pocket, Instapaper and Readability, allowing you to save longer-form stories to read them later and not distract you from the latest headlines.
