FIGHTING PHOTO FRAUD. Estimates place the number of images being uploaded online every single day at about 1.8 billion, with no guarantees that the photos are genuine or altered. The biggest concern, according to the team at Truepic, is the growing number of fake profile pictures on dating sites like Tinder. In an attempt to ensure photographs online aren’t fraudulent, Truepic has launched an app which watermarks images to prove its authenticity. Truepic’s SDK is also available for download and can be embedded into other photo apps. All a user needs do is take a picture either within Truepic or an associated app and the company’s patented technology verifies if the image has been edited or not, then watermarks it with a time stamp, geocode and a username. The photograph is also assigned a six-digit code and URL before being stored in the company’s ‘digital vault’. Users can retrieve the image later via their website. The watermarked image can then be exported for use anywhere online.
