Panasonic Lumix GH5

PRO-LEVEL MIRRORLESS, WITH OUTSTANDING VIDEO.

- [ THOMAS DANG ]

THE DAYS WHERE DSLR cameras were the only option for pro photographers are over. With the advancement in mirrorless technology giving photographers plenty of options as their tools of trade. With the way that we consume content these days, a lot of photographers are now required to expand their repertoire to include video to stay competitive. One of the biggest advantages of mirrorless cameras over DSLRs is that they are better suited for video, with in camera stabilisation, something that can’t be achieved in DSLRs due to the physical mirror.

Panasonic’s LUMIX GH5 is the latest mirrorless camera aimed at the enthusiast and pro photographers/videographers. Featuring a 20.3MP sensor that is able to capture 4K video at 60fps and Panasonic’s 4K photo mode, all packed into a splash/dust/ freeze-proof body.

The body has all of the standard dials readily accessible, whilst offering custom function buttons to suit any photographer/ videographer’s needs. The only criticism is the placement of the Display button, being located at a place where the thumb naturally sits and is prone to being pressed accidentally. The body is lightweight, featuring a fully articulated LCD screen and a high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). The dual SD card slot also means that you can now shoot JPG and RAW simultaneously onto separate cards and even select where you want your video to be saved.

4K Photo mode is again a big feature in the GH5, with the ability to select a single image from a series of photos at 4K resolution at 60fps. The feature is especially useful for action photographers looking to freeze a single moment, without missing out on the split-second moment. The autofocus tracking is a bit of a hit and miss and is supposed to allow you to track an object as it moves around.

Photo quality is exceptional on the GH5 and we were able to print to A1 photo paper, straight out of the camera. The sensor size means that it’s still not quite up there with the full-frame DSLRs in terms of low light performance. However, the low light performance is good, with very usable images from shooting at up to 12,800 ISO, shooting with RAW.

The GH5 has very good video capability, with the ability to shoot at 180fps for slow motion video at 1080p. Combined with the in camera 5-axis stabilisation, you can achieve some very smooth footage all hand-held. The camera also has a wide range of formats and bit rates.

The GH5 is a great camera aimed at the enthusiast and professional photographer. The 4K video capabilities is second to none and will be more than enough for most photographers that want to create beautiful video reels. The stills photo aspect of the camera is up there with other cameras, despite not being a full-frame camera.
