Record Apple FaceTime calls on Mac

RECORD INTERVIEWS, VOICEMAILS, AND OTHER CALLS WITH THE HELP OF AUDIO HIJACK.

- [ HOLLIN JONES ]

THANKS TO THE clever CoreAudio system that OS X and macOS use to manage the handling and routing of sound inside your Mac, apps such as the excellent Audio Hijack from Rogue Amoeba ( rogueamoeba.com) are able to intercept and record almost any kind of sound. Think of it as introducing a recording device between the source of the sound — an app — and the destination, which is either your Mac’s speakers or your headphones.

Because this is done digitally, there’s no loss of quality. In addition, you can encode audio as it is recorded, so even long recordings won’t use up much storage space. The most obvious use is to record calls made using FaceTime, either redirected from your phone or as a video or audio call in your Mac’s FaceTime app. You can use it with Skype, too — just remember to inform the person that you’re recording first.
