DISGAEA 5: COMPLETE EDITION
A STATISTICAL BATTLEGROUND THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME. $99.95 | Nintendo Switch | www.disgaea.com
Originally launched for the PS4 in 2014, Disgaea 5 is one of those deliberately complicated strategy JRPGs you’ve never dared take a punt on. The series has a reputation for requiring a lot of dedication from the player, but its moreish, grindy format finds a perfect home on the Nintendo Switch. As a tactics game, Disgaea 5 is turn-based affair with some fairly rote anime-style isometric graphics. But it’s the depth of customisation and the sheer weight of its content that makes the game a very worthwhile purchase on the Switch: it’s a fun and flexible JRPG that could potentially keep you busy on your morning commute for the rest of your life. I’ve never played a tactics RPG with any level of dedication, but Disgaea 5 has a decent and accommodating learning curve, and some of the really baffling mechanics don’t make an appearance for tens of hours in — enough time to get acquainted with the basics. If anything, this game is huge value for money if you love tactics and busywork.
