FITNESS TRACKER BUYER’S CHECKLIST

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO GET YOUR STEPS UP, THESE ARE THE ESSENTIAL THINGS YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF WHEN BUYING A BAND.

-

DISPLAY

Make sure you can read the screen, as a few trackers have a small resolution on a compact frame. Probably the most important aspect to get right!

BATTERY

Some units will only last a day, others several months, between charging or changing the battery. Decide what’s best for you and choose accordingly.

GPS

An essential tool to have for more than the most basic activity monitoring so you can view speed, distance and elevation changes. Only three out of the nine tested here don’t offer that function.

HEART RATE MONITOR

An optical HRM sits on the back of the display, if your device has one. Perfect for measuring how hard you’re working and how effectively you’re resting.

DESIGN

Do you want a watch replacement that can match all outfits or simply a piece of workout equipment? You may be able to replace the straps to make this as fashionable as necessary.

WATERPROOFING

Look for 5ATM as a minimum so you don’t have to worry about destroying it if you accidentally wear it in the shower, and to also take it in the pool if you want to track that activity.

SMARTPHONE APP

If this is your first tracker, the standard app will give you plenty of metrics. However, it might be worth linking your account to Map My Run or Strava for more.

SPORTS LIST

Every device here will track your steps, and most will cover your run, cycle and swim. Kayaking, gym work, skiing and paddle boarding requires something more dedicated.
