ON RETURNING TO A MAC-BASED OFFICE...

-

WITH THE RISE OF ADOBE INDESIGN, PUBLISHING DOESN’T NEED TO RELY ON THE MAC/QUARK COMBO THAT DOMINATED THE INDUSTRY WHEN I FIRST BEGAN MY CAREER.

AT THE MOMENT, my personal computing environment is near-perfectly eclectic. I have a desktop PC for gaming, and a Windows 10 S Surface Laptop for travel. I’ve got an Androidpowered phone, and an Apple iPad that – to my chagrin – I have not even charged this year... For work, I have two Mac notebooks. One stays in the office (the more modern and powerful one), while I have a second one for when I work from home.

This reliance upon Macs for work is a relatively new developent, though. For the last... well, very long time, my work and play machines have been PCs. With the rise of Adobe InDesign (with which this magazine and pretty much every magazine you read is laid out), publishing doesn’t need to rely on the Mac/Quark combo that dominated the industry when I first began my career.

Nonetheless, I now find myself back on Macs during the nine-to-five, and... you know what... it’s really like coming home. It feels oddly comfortabe to be back in the land of Finder windows and the holy trinity of Control, Option, and Command.

But, I have rather forgotten pretty much everything I used to know about the platform!

So, it’s more than a little handy that this issue is built around a massive guide to using and troubleshooting Mac and Apple devices. It’s certainly helped me catch up on the myriad changes the Mac environment’s gone through since my last time around, and I’m pretty sure you’ll learn something too.
