How to split a single music file into separate tracks

-

I’ve been given a music album as a single file rather than as individual tracks. Is there a way to split this into the separate songs?

Cat Ellis replies: If you can track down a CUE file for the album (it may have been supplied with it, or try searching www.regeert.nl/

cuesheet/) then armed with the right tool, you can use this file to quickly and easily split the album as required. Our free tool of choice is CUE Splitter. Go to

www.medieval.it/cuesplitter-pc/ – if you’re running Windows 10 then choose the UWP version (which we are featuring here); if you’re running Windows 8.1 and earlier, choose the older PC version.

Launch CUE Splitter and click the Open button. Select your CUE sheet – which should be in the same folder as the audio file – and click Open. A list should appear. Either click the Scissors button to split all tracks, or the menu button to select.

Review the default options – General can be left alone, but you may wish to change the file mask. Click the Pencil button to create a new template – click ‘+’ to create your chosen mask using the tools provided. Click the Back button next to the app title.

Make sure your new file mask is selected from the drop-down menu and then click the Scissors button to select the folder to store your

split tracks in. Click ‘Select Folder’ and the album tracks will be swiftly split into separate files.
