Elgato Dock

A WELL MADE AND HANDSOME DOCK WITH WHAT WE’D CONSIDER A FULL SET OF CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS.

- [ BEN MANSILL ]

HERE’S A DOCK for your Mac or PC that does it all, and then some. While pricy at $569, the set of ports it offers is impressively comprehensive. It connects to your machine via a single Thunderbolt 3 cable, which also allows charging at an impressive 85w. The front of the aluminium case has a pair of USB 3.1 type A ports (so, easy for quick USB drive access, or mouse and keyboard connecting), combo headphone and mic jack and seperate SD + microSD card slots, and around the back there is a headphone jack, Gigabit Ethernet, DisplayPort 1.2, a pair of USB 3.1 type C ports, a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports (thoughtfully labelled distinctly to differentiate them from the USB type C ports) – one of which is used to connect to and recharge your laptop – plus the power plug. Both headphone jacks are power amplified, too.

It’s winning versatility without compromise. Twin monitors are supported via Thunderbolt 3 and Displayport and the maximum resolution is 5120x2880 via Thunderbolt 3 (4096x2160 if using Displayport). This is also the first dock we’re aware of that gives you three downstream USB-C ports. In a perfect world we would have liked one more USB type A, to allow a keyboard and mouse to be used while keeping one remaining USB free for portable drives. A nice software utility allows simultaneous ejection of all connected drives, if you want to do that.

Once again the new Corsair-owned Elgato has delivered a thoughtfully designed dock that manages to include nearly every form of connectivity and power you could ask for.
