Nokia 2720
RETRO CHARM, MODERN TOOLS, BUT A TOUCH CLUNKY.
HMD GLOBAL HAS tried its hand at nostalgic Nokia revivals a few times now, but the company that owns the Finnish namesake has finally brought a bit of modern utility to its novelty lineup. The 4G-compatible Nokia 2720 Flip reinvents the handset of the same name from 2009, adding in contemporary smartphone features such as support for many Google apps and voice assistant (with a dedicated button). For those wanting to kick bad smartphone habits – transforming it back into a functional machine and not an addiction – its limitations will suit you well. Access to Google Maps, Whatsapp, email, and a web browser means that you won’t be left in the lurch when you really need to use these tools, but their clunky operation via the number pad and small 2.8-inch primary display will ensure none of them get overused. Checking the time, date and notification previews on the external display is also a real boon and will suit those trying to tone down their phone usage. But for those that are after a simple feature phone for their less tech-inclined friends or family, some of the alternative products that are specifically aimed at ease-of-use would suit better as many of the aforementioned utilities are likely to just complicate matters. Similarly, even though it certainly is an affordable handset, you can find plenty in the way of ‘smarter’ handsets that retail at this price, and even older flagships that have dropped considerably since launch. For those wanting a retro novelty or to curb their phone usage without losing core tools, the Nokia 2720 Flip is a great choice, but for those simply on a budget or after accessibility, look elsewhere.
