HOW TO Adjust important settings.

The iTunes and App Stores are nicer to browse these days, with slick animation and videos that autoplay.

1

STOP UNINVITED USE You may want to limit access to some features unless your device recognizes you’re in control. In Settings > Touch/ Face ID & Passcode, look under “Allow access when locked”. You won’t want a stranger to get access.

2

GUARD YOUR PRIVACY Review whether apps can track your real– world position in Settings > Privacy > Location Services: always, never, or only when using the app. Also, ensure you haven’t unduly granted access to personal things, like photos.

3

STOP INFO LEAKING In Settings > Notifications, set Show Previews to When Unlocked so detailed info isn’t shown on the Lock screen until you use Touch/Face ID. Or limit this to specific apps in the list; each has a Show Previews setting.

4

MOBILE DATA PERMISSION Some apps offer fine control over how they use data. For example, see mobile data options in Settings > Music and Settings > iTunes & App Stores, and the Video Autoplay item in the latter.

5

RESTRICT OTHER APPS Not all apps offer fine control of mobile data usage. To prevent others going online when not using Wi–Fi, scroll down to the list of apps in Settings > Mobile Data, and turn off the switch next to any app you want to restrict.

6

CONTROL SIRI BETTER Siri usually speaks no matter how you call it and whether it’s set for voice or typed input. To have it speak only if initiated with “Hey Siri”/from headphones, pick Hands–Free Only in Settings > General > Accessibility > Siri.

7

HIDDEN DICTIONARIES Select some text in iOS and tap Look Up in the options bar that appears, then scroll down and tap Manage Dictionaries to download dictionaries and thesauri for use with this feature (you might prefer to do this on Wi–Fi).

8

TWEAK THE KEYBOARD Apple has a guide in Settings > General > Keyboard at bit.ly/mfioskbd. You may want to turn off auto–capitalisation/ correction. Enable Caps Lock lets you double–tap the Up–arrow for capitals without holding that key.

9

HOME BUTTON ISSUES? If your old iPad’s Home button is wearing out, turn on AssistiveTouch in Settings > General > Accessibility. Set the single tap to Home, and check the other actions available. TL
