ROG Strix Go 2.4

A very versatile gaming headset.

-

It’s a sad fact of life that as you pack more features into a product, the price is going to rise accordingly. Dropping three C-notes on a pair of gaming headphones might seem excessive to most, but if you get what you’re paying for - clarity of sound, unique and cool features, and an impressive degree of freedom, then the cost is worth it. And that’s definitely the case with Asus’ latest set of cans.

One of the Go 2.4’s best new features is USB-C charging and wireless connectivity. This not only offers superb charging times - you can get a few hours charge in less than 20 minutes, and a full charge will last through two or three days of gaming - but also allows the Go to be used on-the-go with a Nintendo Switch. It can be hooked up using a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection to your PC, or to a USB-C smartphone with an included dongle. Finally, the package complete with a 3.5mm cable so you can hook it up to an Xbox or any similarly jacked device. If you’re a gamer with a range of platforms looking for a single audio solution, the Go

2.4 hits the mark admirably.

It’s handy then that the Go 2.4 comes with a useful carrying case, cleverly segmented and appointed to carry everything you need for the headset. Equally handy is the detachable microphone and restrained Asus/ROG branding, making it as good a choice for listening to music while you’re out and about as it is for gaming. There’s a even a second mic built into the headphones themselves, so you can take calls. It’s not as good as the boom mic, but it serves its purpose well.

Amazingly, all this comes in a very light and comfortable design, able to fold up for storage, and with earcups that twist flat to sit on your shoulders when not in use - though those cups are a touch on the small side, they’re at least well-padded and easy on the ears even during marathon gaming sessions.

Audio quality is punchy and rich, sounding great in games of all stripes, and pretty good for music and movies as well. They don’t sound quite so good as a set of dedicated audio headphones, but considering the overall versatility on offer the Go 2.4 is a compelling proposition. The boom mic offers excellent clarity of communication, though its noise cancelling effect can cut out some richness of tone. Again, though, this is fine for gaming, as it cuts out other sounds, such as the clacking of a mechanical keyboard.

You can get better audio headphones for the same price, but you’ll be hard put to find a set of cans with as a wide a featureset as these. The Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 is pretty much perfect for the multiplatform gamer.
