iOS 14 & iPADOS AT A GLANCE Translate

-

Your quick-look guide to the new features.

Home Screen

All of your apps will be automatically organised into the new App Library so that you can find them easier, and you will be able to hide existing Home Screens filled with apps to reduce the visual clutter on your device.

Widgets

You can now drag and drop widgets onto your Home Screens to sit among your app icons and pick from one of three sizes to suit your needs. The Smart Stack presents your most-needed widgets in one place on your Home Screen.

Picture in Picture

Whatever you are watching can be reduced to a small independent window on your Home Screen that can be dragged anywhere so that you can continue to watch while simultaneously performing other tasks on your device.

Siri

The interface has been redesigned so that it no longer takes up the whole screen, and Siri is now smarter much, too, using more websites to source the answers to more complicated questions that you might ask.

Brand-new to iOS 14, this app can translate to and from 11 different languages (at present) and features a landscape conversation’‘ mode that can detect and translate text or voice from both sides for a more natural feel.

Messages

The option to pin conversations has been added, as have more Memojis. But the real star of the show is the improved group chats featuring inline replies and mentions to make it easier to keep track of who is answering who.

Maps

As well as more detailed city maps, this app benefits from several new features to reduce our carbon footprints, including new directions for cyclists (complete with elevation info) and EV routing for the latest smart cars.

Calls

Instead of taking up the entire screen on your device, when you now receive calls they will appear as a Mac-like notification at the top of your device’s display so you aren’t suddenly jolted out of what you are doing. Much better.

CarPlay

This features new wallpaper options and apps (including Quick Food Ordering), but the biggest advancement is a digital version of your car keys that lets you unlock and start your vehicle using your iPhone.

App Store

The new App Clips feature gives you just enough access to apps that you haven’t downloaded but might need at a specific time – such as a dedicated app you need to pay for parking. Just point your iPhone at an icon or code to access the clip.

Sidebar

Incorporated into Photos, Notes, Files and Music to make the apps more Mac-like in navigation. You can also drag and drop items from the main screen into a different location in the sidebar to make organisation more intuitive.

Search

This enhanced search facility is nearly identical to Spotlight on your Mac. You can access it from any app and it is completely universal. You can use it to find content on your device or instantly perform a quick web search.
