Hair today, GONE TOMORROW

But I still felt like something was missing.

‘Why don’t we put a colour through your hair?’ Steph suggested.

With shoulder-length brown wavy hair, my friends had always been envious of my natural colour.

Though I’d always wished I had straight blonde hair, I’d come to grow comfortable with it.

Still, I gured it could use a freshen up and Steph insisted I try henna – a natural plant dye.

Having never dyed my hair before, I was happy when Steph offered to do it for me. ‘It’ll be easy,’ she promised. Back home, she melted the block of solid colour before applying it on my hair.

The pack recommended leaving it for a minimum of two hours, but Steph said I’d get the best results if I left it on overnight instead.

After she wrapped my hair in cling lm, I went to bed.

When I woke the next morning, I jumped straight into the shower, eager to see my new ’do. But the dye had gone hard and clung to my hair like dried mud.

Trying to untangle the clumps, I was horri ed when the ends snapped off in my hands.

By the time I’d washed it all out, my hair had thinned to half the volume it was before.

‘What am I going to do?’ I sobbed to Steph on the phone. ‘My date’s tomorrow and my hair is gone!’

Morti ed by what had happened, Steph was over in minutes with a selection of wigs she’d collected from various dress-up parties she’d gone to.

Incredibly, she had one almost identical to my natural length and colour.

Trying it on, I felt like an imposter, but Steph assured me Adam wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

Amazingly, when I met him again the following night for dinner, he couldn’t keep his eyes off me.

‘You look so beautiful tonight,’ he smiled.

Now, ve years on, Adam and I are happily married with a baby girl on the way.

Thankfully, my hair grew back in three months and he was never the wiser that a bad dye job almost cost us our fairytale ending.
