One theory on the origins of rocky road is that it was invented in Australia in the 1850s to fool goldminers into buying ice-cream that hadn’t survived the trip from Europe. Vendors mixed dodgy products with nuts and other fillers, such as biscuits, to make it palatable. The name alluded to the bumpy tracks to the gold fields.
