A great change in the guard
Captain Megan Couto, 24, has become the first woman to lead the Queen’s Guard, but the catch is she’s not British. Rather, she is a Canadian soldier whose unit, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (named after Queen Victoria’s granddaughter), was invited to guard the monarch as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary. No woman had led the Queen’s Guard before because women were excluded, until recently, from close-combat ground roles in the British military.
