It didn’t matter that yacht racing was a pastime of the rich – when Perth businessman Alan Bond’s Australia II crew won the America’s Cup in 1983 it was a win for the nation. Skipper John Bertrand (left, with son) and his crew, with a revolutionary winged keel designed by Ben Lexcen, broke the United States’ 132-year stranglehold on the title, and ended the longest winning streak in sport history. Work’s Down Under as its soundtrack, the win also introduced the iconic symbol of the boxing kangaroo.
