Tank upgrade to round off facility’s offerings

-

ONE of the region’s favourite - performance venues - is set to become e even bigger and better.

The Tanks Art Centre- is to receive a $2.22 million upgrade in time e for the closure of the Civic Theatre in February 2016.

Audience capacity at Tank 5 will be increased to 700 standing, - or 500 in theatrestyle - seating; and a permanent stage, green room,m dressing rooms, and bar facilities will be added.

The design will make the best use of available space, allowing for the increased audience size.

Climate control will improve the comfort level for audience members, while improved production rigging and equipment will enhance the quality of shows.

Tank 3 will also be converted into a secondary performing arts space, using equipment from the Civic Theatre.

This will create an extra performance space that can cater for smaller shows with an audience of 200-500 people.

Works will be carried out during the normal wet season shutdown period from November to February to avoid any disruption to the venue and its scheduling.

The Tanks Arts Centre, which opened its doors in 1995, is built on the site of three decommissioned concrete fuel tanks, which were built in 1944 for the Royal Australian Navy during World War II.
