Caddie back to get Scott on track

- JIM TUCKER

ADAM Scott has only been able to persuade Steve Williams into a caddying comeback because New Zealand’s speedway season is over.

While Scott was grappling with a ragged game at the Masters in April, Williams was behind the wheel of his Ford Mustang enjoying a passion his lucrative career as a bagman allowed.

Instead of dealing with the drive shaft and starter motor issues that dogged his dirt track season, Williams now has to fix Scott’s flat tyre.

Last year’s former world No.1 has drifted to No.12 with his putting issues and Williams is a key grease-and-oil change before the season is lost.

Williams, 51, has only agreed to a four-tournament return but it includes the final three majors of the year, starting with the US Open in two weeks.

“Steve was adamant that he was not going to caddie in 2015 – so he took some convincing – but I am very happy he’s agreed to help out,” Scott said.

“We’ve had great success together so I’m looking forward to being on the links with Steve again.”

Scott and Zimbabwean caddie Mike Kerr ended their brief stint together last week.

Williams was on Scott’s bag for his Masters triumph in 2013 and they parted last September so the Kiwi could enjoy semiretirement.

The Australian credits Williams’ astute read for helping him sink the winning playoff putt at Augusta two years ago.

Scott’s 20 three-putts from nine events is one of the worst on the PGA Tour this season.

If Williams’ comeback is temporary, Scott can always fall back on some of the caddie applications he put aside late last year.
