Accused yells an apology

A FRENCH national, who allegedly attacked a Cairns paramedic, yelled “I’m sorry” as he covered his face during a dash from the Cairns Magistrates Court.

Timothee Leon Laurent Rousselle was granted bail on strict conditions.

The 21-year-old had to surrender his passport, must not consume alcohol or illicit drugs and must submit to testing.

He cannot go near an international or domestic airport and must report to the Cairns police station three times a week starting today while on bail.

Legal Aid duty solicitor Mark Butler said his client planned to stay in Australia.

Mr Rousselle is charged with seriously assaulting a public officer.

The court was told that Mr Rousselle punched the paramedic twice in the face.

It is alleged that about 3.40am on Wednesday a Queensland ambulance was called to a Minnie St hostel where a man was unwell.

About 4am, police were called to help after the two attending paramedics had retreated to the ambulance.

Mr Rousselle allegedly rushed at the vehicle and attacked a female paramedic, punching her in the head and dragging her out of the passenger side of the ambulance.

He was restrained by the male paramedic and members of the public until police arrived. The QAS officer, 42, received injuries to her face.

The court was told that Mr Rousselle has been evicted from the hostel and must find new accommodation.

The court was told Mr Rousselle would be applying for legal aid. His matter was adjourned to October 20.
