Every job teaches us something

-

PORT Bajool marketing and communications manager Wendy Morris says first-time job seekers should never discount getting a hand from a family member or friend.

Ms Morris’ first job was working in her family’s dinghy hire business, a role which gave her plenty of hands-on experience she has taken with her for the rest of her career.

“I did it for two years while finishing high school, and although I was already pretty reasonable at it, the job taught me how to work with people,” she said.

A role running a mining camp assay lab in western Queensland at 22 was also a life-changing experience.

“One of the great life lessons from that job was that you really can adapt to anything – and constantly learn,” she said.

“Even though I had studied marine biology, I learnt to love the Australian bush and even ended up doing an honours thesis on desert birds in WA.

“Just take one step at a time. It might not be your dream job – and fully explore it while you do your very best.”
