Urban display shames ‘legend’

- JONATHON MORAN

THANK goodness for Keith Urban! Rock “legend” Richie Sambora, the guitarist from Bon Jovi, threatened to give the grand final pre-match entertainment a bad name with a performance that could aptly be dubbed “Living in Despair”.

Sambora, 57, looked like he had seen better days as he struggled vocally to sing two Bon Jovi covers, with his Australian girlfriend Orianthi helping with the guitar work.

It could only be described as a strange appearance with Orianthi wearing a hat and sunglasses through the set.

The pair murdered some of the high notes.

Radio’s Ryan Fitzgerald summed it up with this sarcastic tweet: “This Bon Jovi cover band are really good”.

Thankfully, Urban was on hand to save the day.

He hit a high when he took to the stage with Jessica Mauboy to perform his track The Fighter.

Although Channel 7 Sunrise presenter Sam Mac was not entirely impressed.

“Truly special sight. 80 thousand fans humming along pretending to know the words to Keith Urban songs “da love you da yeah da” #NRLGF.”

Senator Derryn Hinch said Urban’s performance trumped Sting at the AFL grand final.

“Keith Urban on fire at the NRL GF shows why Sting’s Message In A Bottle was not a great MCG choice.”
