Air raids kill two

ALEPPO: The largest hospital in rebel-held east Aleppo has been forced to shut after renewed Russian and Syrian air raids that killed two people. There were reports the hospital was struck by barrel bombs in the latest attacks. Since President Bashar al-Assad’s forces launched a new offensive on Aleppo last month, at least 400 people have been killed, with an estimated 250,000 people living under government siege.

More than 70 hurt

VELEZ-MALAGA: At least 77 people have been injured, five seriously, after a gas cylinder exploded in a restaurant in Spain. Local authorities said the weekend explosion happened during a festival in the town of Velez-Malaga on the southern coast. None of those seriously injured were at risk of death, a hospital spokesman said. The chef alerted customers to the fire which gave most enough time to escape serious injury.

Earthquake alert

SANTA ANA: Southern California residents are on alert until Wednesday for the possibility of a major earthquake, officials said. The warning by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services follows a series of small tremors deep under the Salton Sea.

Protestors targeted

CALAIS: French police have fired tear gas and water cannons on protesters defending migrants in the northern city of Calais as the government prepares to shut down the city’s notorious migrant camp. Demonstrators defied a ban by authorities on yesterday’s protest. The protesters say they are expressing solidarity with the migrants, who face imminent expulsion from the camp. Five police officers and a journalist sustained light injuries, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. President Francois Hollande has pledged to close the camp by the end of the year and transfer thousands of migrants around France.

Shooting death

LOS ANGELES: Police have shot and killed a man in south Los Angeles at the end of a car chase yesterday. Officers tried to pull over a car with paper plates, believing the vehicle may have been stolen, authorities said. When the driver refused to stop, police began a pursuit, according to Sergeant Barry Montgomery. He said the passenger got out of the car, and ran into the back of a house, where he was shot and killed. The driver then fled the scene and remained on the loose. Sgt Montgomery said a weapon was recovered at the scene, but he would not say what it was.
