Bird on the handlebars beats time in the bush

CROC Trophy thrillseekers are getting an early glimpse of the Far North’s unique wildlife but Austrian mountain biker Matthias Grick knows the true dangers are to come on the track.

The 25-year-old joined a largely European contingent of entrants in meeting interesting locals at Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome yesterday, ahead of tomorrow’s opening stage.

The Croc Trophy runs for eight stages, starting from Paradise Palms before weaving throughout Smithfield and the Tablelands and finishing at Port Douglas.

AUSTRIAN Matthias Grick says it will be an uphill battle to topple defending Croc Trophy champion Urs Huber but has his sights on a stage win after his first experience last year.

The 25-year-old was part of a largely European contingent who met local wildlife at Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome yesterday, but it’s not the first time he has encountered the Far North’s dangers.

Grick, one of eight men in the elite field, finished ninth last year but it was the sightseeing afterwards that made him jump, although he had no hesitation returning for one of the toughest UCI races.

“Last year was my first Croc Trophy, but after the race we did the tourist stuff,” he said.

“I’ve seen one snake, that was enough, but not during the race. It was just on a walk through the woods.

“But they said when the trucks go in front during the race, it scares the animals away, so hopefully that’s true.”

Grick will race beside idol Huber again this year but admitted it would be tough to keep up with the three-time champion for the whole week.

“I don’t think I can challenge him for the title but a stage win is possible, if everything works perfect,” he said.

“He’s a legend. I watched him and read about him in magazines when I was young. It’s really cool racing together.

“I got tips last year and maybe we’ll have more time to talk about the race this year.

“I have some experience and also my Europe season was very good this year, better than last year, so I hope I’m in good shape for the race. Top five is the goal and to be on the podium would be perfect.”

Grick has a better chance of the perfect result after Canadian rider Cory Wallace, tipped as Huber’s nearest rival, withdrew after a recent crash.

Racing starts at noon tomorrow at Paradise Palms Golf Club.
