Don’t be scared, it’s just a bit of fun

- Pasco.rogato@news.com.au

PASCO ROGATO IT’S overcommercialised. It’s an American thing. It has no relevance here.

I’ve heard all of those criticisms of Halloween and although those comments may have some truth, I’d suggest before dismissing this annual event, perhaps get out there and give it a go.

My two children love Halloween; there’s the dressing up, the attempting to scare other children and of course there’s the lollies – lots and lots of lollies. Yep, at the end of the night there’s the inevitable crazy sugar buzz, but I don’t think that should deter parents from letting their kids have some fun with Halloween.

The first time I took my boys trick or treating was something of an adventure.

Being the sort of guy who likes fancy dress, I donned the scariest mask I could find, draped a heavy black sheet over me and headed out with my two children, who were also dressed for the occasion.

After a little persuasion at the start and some direction, my two little monsters eagerly knocked at every door they could: “Trick or treat” they’d exclaim, and were often rewarded with a treat.

The delight on my children’s faces was remarkable, as was the huge smile from those adults dumping lollies and sweets into their Halloween baskets.

Over the years I have watched as more and more children have ventured out Halloween evening to partake in the festivities.

Yes, Halloween is most often associated with the US and its relevance in Australia is small, but there is no doubt more people are jumping on board.

However, I know not everyone wants to be involved, and many people would prefer not to have children constantly knocking at their doors.

I was told early in the piece a simple rule, you only visited those homes with their porch light on.

So if you’d prefer not to be involved, leave the front light off, and to those involved in Halloween, can I urge you to steer clear of those homes and respect their wishes, there are many, many other homes to visit.

Happy trick or treating.
