Friend hooks Test debut

- MICHAEL CARAYANNIS

NRL JAKE Friend will use his Test debut as a chance to cement his place as Cameron Smith’s replacement in future Queensland and Australian teams.

Friend also hit out at suggestions he will be dumped as Sydney Roosters skipper, declaring he wants to continue in the role despite a “draining” initiation as captain this year.

The 26-year-old is expected to make his long-awaited representative debut after coach Mal Meninga signalled his intention to hand Friend a Test jersey against Scotland, which could see him line up against Northern Pride’s Sheldon Powe-Hobbs.

“I wanted to make the tour,” Friend said. “It was a goal. I’m pumped to be here and something I always wanted to do.

“I’m behind Cam but want to keep my spot in this squad, especially with the World Cup next year. I’m hoping to get a game and to show my wares in a Test jumper.

“It is but it isn’t (frustrating being stuck behind Smith). You’ve got to take it for what it is. Cam is an awesome player. One of the best and has been for such a long time. To get picked and get a chance to be on the tour is pretty exciting.”

Friend usurped NSW hooker Robbie Farah as Smith’s understudy. But he feared the Roosters’ disappointing showing this season could have cost him a Test spot.

“I didn’t except to make it because we had a poor year,” Friend said.

“(Meninga) hasn’t named the team but he has told us everyone will play. When he told everyone they will get a game, it was exciting to know that you will get a Test debut. It’s something I’ve dreamt of.”
